What Is a PPRC Pipe?

PPRC stands for polypropylene random copolymer. It is a plastic pipe made for hot and cold water supply inside buildings. Unlike old galvanised iron (GI) pipes, PPRC does not rust, does not scale up on the inside and does not give water a metallic taste. The joints are made by heat fusion, which melts the pipe and the fitting together into one piece, so a properly welded joint has no thread, glue or rubber seal that can leak later.

Because of these benefits, PPRC has become the standard choice for bathroom and kitchen water lines, overhead tank connections, geysers and solar water heaters across Pakistan.

PPRC pipes are sold by outer diameter in millimetres, while older plumbers and taps still talk in inches. Use this chart to match them:

PN Ratings Explained: PN10, PN16, PN20

The PN number printed on a PPRC pipe is its nominal pressure class. It tells you how much pressure the pipe is designed to hold, measured in bar, at normal room temperature. A higher PN means a thicker pipe wall.

PN10 – thinner wall, suitable for cold water lines with normal pressure, such as gravity lines from an overhead tank.
PN16 – a middle class used for cold water at higher pressure or for mild warm water.
PN20 – thicker wall, the usual choice for hot water lines from a geyser or solar heater, and for lines connected to a pressure pump.

As temperature rises, any plastic pipe holds less pressure, so the hot water side of a house should always use a higher PN class than the cold side. Many homeowners simply use PN20 for both to keep things simple.

How to Choose the Right PPRC Pipe

Know your water source. A gravity tank gives low pressure; a pressure pump or direct pump line needs a stronger pipe.
Separate hot and cold. Plan PN20 or higher for geyser and solar lines.
Size the main line generously. A main line that is too thin causes weak flow when two taps run together. For most houses, a 32mm main with 25mm and 20mm branches works well.

Count your lengths. Pipes come in fixed lengths of 3 or 4 metres. Measure your runs and add some extra for cutting and mistakes.

Installation Tips

Use a proper PPRC fusion machine with the correct die size for each diameter.
Cut pipes square with a PPRC cutter, and wipe the pipe end and fitting clean before heating.
Heat both parts for the recommended time, push them together straight without twisting, and hold for a few seconds.
Support long runs with clamps so the pipe does not sag, especially on hot water lines.
Pressure-test the complete system before closing walls or laying tiles.
